In conjunction with the Cross Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU), Cultural Research Centre has been participating in promoting heritage education in secondary schools, in order to enable students, appreciate their roots, and utilize the knowledge in today’s world for harmonious living in order to build a better tomorrow. This is an important programme, since every human being belongs to a culture, and the young being the future of our society. This partnership is benefitting 8 secondary schools in Jinja district where Cultural Heritage Clubs have been established.

Teaching Lusoga in schools

In addition to FAL, CRC spearheaded the implementation of the Government White Paper on Education which recommended the use of “Mother Tongue” in Lower Primary as a medium of instruction. This was done by initiating the teaching of Lusoga in Primary Schools on a pilot basis from 2000 to 2007 when the Ministry of Education and Sports eventually made it mandatory. Health promotion and Environmental protection in Busoga through the promotion of sustainable utilization of herbal medicine.

A healthy mind, which is capable of thinking critically in an effort to solve problems, needs to be settled in a healthy body and a healthy environment. It is in the promotion of harmony among these, that Cultural Research Centre embarked on researching the herbal medicine world of the Basoga, as well as sensitizing and training herbalists on how to sustainably harvest and use herbal medicines. This not only contributes to the protection of the environment and improving human health conditions in the target communities, but also improves on their savings, given that what would be spend in hospitals and clinics is saved.

The National Bureau of Statistics Household Survey Report of 1999/2000 implicated Busoga as a region with low literacy levels, indicating Kamuli as the lowest. This prompted Cultural Research Centre (CRC) to conduct a survey in 2008, whose findings found indeed parts of Busoga in a sorry state. In the analysis of these findings, it was found out that there was a close link between illiteracy and poverty, since information is power; and yet a lot of information is bypassed by those who do not know how to read and write. Library And Museum Services

Since inception, the Centre has offered Library and Museum services to the general public both local and international at affordable entry fees. The library has a variety of books on several subjects for all level learning. While the museum displays a number of traditional artefacts mainly from Busoga, to educate the young generation about their rich ancestral history and heritage, as well as educating the masses on the need for preserving our heritage from extinction.

Promoting harmonious living for sustainable development in Busoga Dialogue meetings and sensitization and dissemination workshops

At one moment Busoga sub-region was grappling with innumerable conflicts arising mainly from land disputes and domestic violence. This prompted Cultural Research Centre to engage various stakeholders especially Clan Leaders, Council members of chiefdoms, opinion leaders and Area Land Committees in the region to challenge them to work for the promotion of harmony. Dialogue meetings and sensitization workshops were conducted, teaching people what the law on lands states, as well as amicably solving land disputes. Land wrangles are in many areas part and parcel of the factors that engender domestic violence.

The Diocese of Jinja set up Cultural Research Centre, with the purpose of researching, documenting and studying cultural elements that can be employed as a foundation for preaching the gospel and entrenching the people of Busoga into their faith. In a way, to form Christians who are truly Basoga and truly Christian. The process is referred to in the Catholic Church as ‘INCULTURATION’. Information

Cultural Research Centre (CRC) is a Faith Based NGO founded by the Diocese of Jinja in 1997.

We have been part of the CRC since December, 1998.  This was one year after the opening of the Centre.
